Serbia advises against non-essential travel to Croatia

The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published updated travel recommendations in which countries are classified according to security risks. Croatia has been placed in the category of countries to which Serbian citizens are advised not to travel unless the trip is necessary.

Serbia advises against non-essential travel to Croatia

The ministry introduced a system with four categories – green, yellow, orange and red. The red category includes 23 countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, where travel is discouraged for security reasons. The orange category includes 28 countries, among them Croatia as the only European country. For these destinations the ministry recommends travel only in urgent cases. The yellow category includes 61 countries, among them Albania, where additional caution is advised. Slovenia has been placed in the green category, where the recommendation is normal caution.

As the reason for placing Croatia in a stricter category, the authorities cited more frequent incidents, tensions and security circumstances. Among the events that attracted attention over the past year was an incident in Split last November, when a group of people entered a cultural event organised by the Serbian minority and interrupted it.

The Serbian ministry advises its citizens that if travel to Croatia is necessary they should avoid public gatherings and places where provocations could occur. Travellers are urged to be cautious in communication and to take care of their personal safety and property. Organised trips have been highlighted as particularly sensitive, especially visits by sports teams and cultural delegations.
